Each year the Department of Studies in Justice, Culture, & Social Change offers awards and scholarships to outstanding students in departmental programs. The purpose of these awards and scholarships is to recognize students who have done exemplary work as reflected not only in course grades, but also in their overall quality of contributions within departmental programs. The number of awards and amounts vary based on donor guidelines and available funds but usually range from $500 to $3,000.
Students enrolled in our programs should also consider applying for College-wide CAHSS Scholarships & Awards. With just one application, CAHSS students can apply for multiple College-wide scholarships and awards. These general scholarships and awards can be in the thousands so it is well worth your time to apply. The CAHSS site also lists departmental scholarships and awards, many of which are available to students who are minoring in CAHSS programs.Â
Departmental Awards and ScholarshipsÂ
Outstanding Student Award in Anthropology ($500): Awarded to an outstanding student in Anthropology. (Graduating seniors AND returning students are eligible.)
2022 Award Recipient: Sam Meyer
Walter Baeumler Award in Criminology ($500): Awarded to an outstanding student in Criminology. (Graduating seniors AND returning students are eligible.)
2022 Award Recipient: Gracie Bergman
Franz Scholarship in Sociology ($2,000): Awarded to an outstanding student in Sociology. Preference given to students with financial need.Â
2022 Award Recipient: Evan Gunderson
James L. Otto Memorial Scholarship ($1,000): Awarded to a student planning to pursue a career in law enforcement. Preference given to students with financial need.
2022 Award Recipient: Marisa Mulholland
Arthur Pulford Scholarship in Criminology ($3,000): Awarded to full-time students in Criminology who are committed to the professionalization of criminal justice agency management and service delivery activities and who understand and value a commitment to engaging in the career field in ways that include involvement in activities that attend to issues of inequality and justice. Students applying for the Pulford Scholarship must include in their application a statement which indicates how they meet the above criteria.Â
2022 Award Recipient: Jackson Baker
Jane Maddy Book Award ($2000): Jane Maddy was one of the founding members of the Women's Studies program at UMD and was dedicated to feminist scholarship and activism. This award was established in her honor to recognize outstanding students who have demonstrated their commitment to the mission of Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies.

The Women's Studies Legacy Award ($1,000): Awarded to an outstanding student in Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies.
