The UMD Bulldog Marching Band performs at all UMD home football games, Minnesota State Fair, and the Christmas City of the North Parade, as well as a number of other campus and community events.
Chamber Singers is an auditioned chamber ensemble selected from the membership of University Singers. Members of the Chamber Singers explore the rich variety of music for small ensemble, with an emphasis on non-conducted or self-conducted performances. Chamber singers is open to students of all majors and minors.
This choir is a non-auditioned choral ensemble that is open to students of all majors. Concert Choral is dedicated to the rehearsal and performance of literature from a variety of cultures and historical periods. Concert Chorale is directed by Dr. Ryan Deignan.
UMD Jazz offers several jazz combos that are taken for credit. These groups place emphasis on developing small group skills including improvisation and composition by preparing and performing standard and original compositions.
The University of Minnesota Duluth Opera Studio, serves both the graduate and undergraduate vocal studies majors and other qualified singers.
Our students are given the opportunity to perform in chamber ensembles, master classes, weekly student recitals, musicals, chamber orchestra, symphony orchestra and a variety of other string ensembles.
The UMD Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr. Gene Koshinski, performs a wide variety of literature including historically significant works; contemporary trends in percussion ensemble literature; world music; elements of popular music; and brand new works for percussion.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is a select unit of approximately 50 music and non-music majors and is one of the premier ensembles in the UMD Department of Music. The ensemble regularly performs new compositions for the wind medium and programs the most outstanding literature currently available.
The Concert Band is open to all UMD students wishing to continue in music-making throughout their collegiate years. The band is open to all students regardless of major. Without demanding a significant obligation in a student’s schedule, Concert Band members meet three times a week and perform two formal concerts each semester.
This choir is the premier large ensemble in the UMD choral program and is open to students of any major, by audition. University Singers maintains an active performance schedule and incorporates annual concert traditions. University Singers is conducted by Dr. Richard W. Robbins.
Vocal Jazz consists of two small auditioned vocal groups; Lake Effect and Chill Factor that are both dedicated to the performance of literature for vocal jazz ensembles. These ensembles welcome current students of all majors.
