Sarah Stark | Graphic Design and Marketing BFA

Sarah graduated from UMD SFA in 2016

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I never really had an answer to this question - I knew I wanted to do something with art/that was creative, but I didn't know how or what.

What major[s]/minor[s] did you graduate with?
BFA in Graphic Design and Marketing

Where do you live these days?
Tampa, FL

Where do you work? What kind of work do you do?
I am the Graphic Design and Marketing Coordinator at the Tampa JCCs and Federation. I create and manage all marketing materials and promotional items, ranging from corporate forms to brochures and magazine ads.

How are you involved with the arts in your current community?
I am the Social Media Chair for AIGA Tampa Bay. I joined at an awesome time while we are trying to revamp the chapter, so I am working with amazing people trying to create a larger and more engaging design community in the area.

What was your favorite class or project in college?
GD3 with Janice Kmetz. I loved all of my branding projects.

How did SFA professors influence you?
They challenged me to make better work, encouraged my creativity, and helped me with issues in and outside of class. Building relationships helped me enjoy going to class and develop an honest communication channel about my work so I could really appreciate their feedback.

What advice would you give to a incoming Art & Design student?
Get involved!! Start NOW. Make the connections and they'll take you places (whether they're in SFA or not), and ask questions! Alsooo, Pull the all nighters with your friends - that's when you make the best memories.

What was your favorite local Duluth hangout in college?
Tavern on the Hill!

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you since graduating from UMD SFA?
I was selected to go to the AIGA Leadership Retreat to represent the Tampa Bay chapter this past weekend. I was able to meet and connect with amazing designers and and received a ton of eye opening advice. It's been great being a "design leader," as they put, it in my new city!

What was your biggest takeaway from UMD SFA?
The design community is a great community. Whether it is at UMD, locally in Duluth, or nationally through AIGA. It's filled with some of the best people and the best inspiration.

How did you make the decision to attend UMD for school?
I really just wanted to be in Duluth, I love the city. I didn't set foot on campus until I registered for classes. Down the road I want to move back for the same reason.
