Amanda graduated from UMD SFA in 2014

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A heart surgeon.

What major[s]/minor[s] did you graduate with?
Art Education major/Art History minor

Where do you live these days?
Wonderful West Duluth!

Where do you work? What kind of work do you do?
I teach K-4 Art at Churchill Elementary in Cloquet.

How are you involved with the arts in your current community?
I attend as many local art shows, concerts, and plays as I can!

What was your favorite class or project in college?
I loved all of my Art History classes. The knowledge I gained of world history and culture through Art was amazing. I'd take those classes again in a heartbeat.

How did SFA professors influence you?
My Art Ed and Art History professors pushed me to challenge myself and remained kind and supportive even when I struggled. (Shoutout to Alison Aune, Jen Dietrich, and Jen Webb!)

What advice would you give to a incoming Art & Design student?
Be yourself, work hard, but don't worry too much about graduating with honors. What matters in Art is your passion!

What was your favorite local Duluth hangout in college?
Amazing Grace Bakery and Cafe. It is still my favorite hangout!

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you since graduating from UMD SFA?
Being an Art teacher and watching my students grow as artists through their elementary years. I love my job so much!

What was your biggest takeaway from UMD SFA?
Art matters and artists rule.

How did you make the decision to attend UMD for school?
I was born and raised in Duluth and wanted to stay.
