Topaz Cooks | Theatre BFA, Stage Management Emphasis

Topaz graduated from UMD SFA in 2014.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An artist

What major[s]/minor[s] did you graduate with?
BFA in Theater with an emphasis in design/tech/management

Where do you live these days?
Duluth, MN

Where do you work? What kind of work do you do?
I work at the Duluth Playhouse as the Production Stage Manager. I oversee their production processes and mentor the stage managers.

How are you involved with the arts in your current community?
The Playhouse is a great source of theater in the community. We have our main series on stage with the bigger titles, our underground series for more experimental work, a children's theater and a theater for young audiences for more family friendly storytelling.

What was your favorite class or project in college?
My favorite class was scenic painting. Most of those projects were fun, and it was awesome to learn different scenic painting techniques.

How did SFA professors influence you?
Each professor in the Theater department influenced me in some way. Mostly with advice on my future and how to make a living in the theater. Some of my favorite advice was from a professor who told me to work hard, make lots mistakes while I'm young (and to learn from them), and not to let anybody bully me. I've kept that piece of advice in my mind over the last few years. It's so applicable to my day-to-day at work.

What advice would you give to a incoming theatre student?
Take advantage of the opportunities the university has to offer! Try something new and you might surprise yourself.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you since graduating from UMD SFA?
Getting a full time job in my field of study. I thought I'd be freelancing until my 30s, so being offered a full time position inspires me to keep working hard.

What was your biggest takeaway from UMD SFA?
The amazing support from my classmates and professors in the Theatre. I have some amazing memories with those humans, and I wouldn't trade those relationships for anything.
