On April 26th, students of the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures were presented with scholarships at the annual End of the Year Awards Reception for the College of Liberal Arts. Many of these awards will help students with the cost of studying abroad. Rachel Kadlec and Abby Savolt will spend the fall semester studying in ViƱa del Mar, Chile. Megan Stuart, Mackenzie Mellum, and Christopher Timm, will participate in UMD's summer program, Language and Culture in Spain, at the University of Salamanca. Allison Krueger, Kailey Stoos-Mohan, and Chloe Swanson, will conduct independent research abroad in Morocco this summer as part of the Student Project for Amity among Nations (SPAN), an opportunity arranged by our French Studies faculty. Elizabeth Frandle will study language and culture in China through UMD's new short term program. And Andrew Neerdaels will spend the 2017-2018 academic year studying in Sevilla, Spain. Aleksandra Gurneau was awarded a scholarship to support her study of German, and scholarships also went to support several students, Emma Kesler, Andrew Neerdaels, Peter Schmitz and Kathryn Smude, studying Cultural Entrepreneurship, through a program established by the CUE board to encourage promising students in this innovative major. In addition, the Tobin Peace and Non-Violence Scholarship, a CLA scholarship established by Hispanic Studies Professor Maureen Tobin Stanley in honor of her father, was awarded to Ruth Axtell-Adams. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is very proud of all of these students and we look forward to hearing about their exciting experiences and future success.
