How To Apply
The 2021-2022 CLA-Wide Online Scholarship Application is now open! Please apply on the One Stop website.

Some scholarships may be offered on a different cycle, so it is important to check with your individual departments and programs for additional scholarship opportunities. CLA students are also eligible for campus-wide scholarships. Information and application materials can be found on the UMD One-Stop website.
Scholarship recipients were notified via email in April 2020. For more information, see the Frequently Asked Questions section below.
Having problems viewing the online scholarship application?
- The online application will not be available on this website until the first week of each spring semester.
- You need to use your UMD login information in order to view the online scholarship applications.
- You should see one CLA-Wide scholarship application. You may also see departmental scholarship applications using this link.
- If you do not see any CLA scholarship applications to click on, please contact [email protected] for an alternative application. This may happen because you are a double-major and cross over collegiate units. The University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus is trying to fix this issue.
By The Numbers
For the 2019-2020 academic year, the College of Liberal Arts awarded 173 scholarships with $276,288 in total awards!
Both undergraduate and graduate students across all CLA departments are recognized at the annual CLA End of the Year Awards Reception.
The list of available scholarships in CLA continues to grow. Not all scholarships listed are awarded every year and this list is subject to change at any time. The number of scholarship awards and amounts vary based on donor guidelines and available funds.
Frequently Asked Questions
When are CLA scholarships awarded?
Scholarships in the College of Liberal Arts are generally awarded in the spring for the following academic year. For example, if you receive a scholarship for the 2020-2021 academic year, you will be notified via email in April 2021 and the scholarship award will be applied to your student account beginning Fall 2021. The award amount is split between Fall 2021 and Spring 2022.
Some scholarships may be offered on a different cycle, so it is important to check with your individual departments and programs for additional scholarship opportunities.
Do I need to fill out the application to receive a CLA scholarship?
Most CLA scholarships are awarded to students who complete the online application each year. However, some scholarships may be awarded on a different cycle or through a nomination process, so it is important to check with your individual departments and programs for additional scholarship opportunities.
Do I need to have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form filled out in order to receive a CLA scholarship?
In order to be considered for a CLA scholarship that lists ‘financial need’ as criteria, you need to have a FAFSA form filled out. Not all CLA scholarships are need-based however, so if you do not have a FAFSA on file by the time you fill out the online CLA-Wide Scholarship Application, you will still be considered for scholarships that are not need-based.
How do I know which scholarships I am applying for using the CLA-Wide Scholarship Application?
A scholarship selection committee will determine your eligibility for any CLA-Wide scholarships that you qualify for based on your application material. This system-wide online application system speaks to PeopleSoft and Financial Aid and will automate much of the information needed once you submit your application. You are responsible for submitting the additional material that is requested, and for answering any prompts that pertain to specific scholarships noted throughout the application. Please read through the application instructions carefully.
Are there other UMD scholarships available?
CLA students are also eligible for campus-wide scholarships. Information and application materials can be found on UMD One-Stop.
Could my financial aid be affected by receiving a scholarship? Receiving a scholarship may reduce your existing financial aid award. For more information about how scholarships affect your financial aid visit UMD One-Stop.
