Sara Minder: Internship

Sara Minder

What is your major?

I am a double major in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Political Science.

Where was your internship placement? (What is the purpose of the organization?)

I had two internships this semester. One was with UMD’s Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC), and the other was with the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group’s (MPIRG) Get Out to Vote Campaign.

What did your general duties involve?

With my WRAC internship, I had to complete a 40-hour training with the Program to Aid Victims of Sexual Assault (PAVSA). I had office hours throughout the week at our office in the Multicultural Center, and I served as an advocate that students could reach out to if they had experienced sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, etc. I was able to offer support and resources to help them with their recoveries. I also planned several events throughout the semester, which focused on various feminist issues.

With my MPIRG internship, I spent a lot of time registering students to vote throughout the semester, as well as educating them about the election process, how to find their polling location, and what would be on their ballot when they went to the polls. I helped plan several democracy-related events, including UMD’s Voterpalooza and a presidential debate viewing party. As the elections came closer, I was involved in a big push to get students to actually go to the polls, which included dorm storms and phone banking.

What was your most memorable experience?

I’d have to say my most memorable experience was when I tabled for an event I organized with the WRAC volunteers called “Pizza Rolls, Not Gender Roles,” where we handed out free pizza rolls with info sheets about why gender roles are harmful. People loved the free food, and we were able to get our message out!

Has your internship influenced your career path?

I feel like my WRAC internship has greatly influenced my career path, because now I feel like I want to have a career with a feminist non-profit organization. I’ve found feminist issues are what I’m really passionate about!
