The Collaborative Piano program at UMD approaches musical collaboration as a distinct and vital component of the landscape of professional musicianship now and in the future. The Master of Music (MM) in prepares students for ever-growing career opportunities as accompanists and chamber musicians, as well as providing them with the tools for teaching accompanying and/or chamber music. Grounded in music history, theory, pedagogy and literature, as well as performance-focused coursework, the program offers young musicians the performance experience with a wide range of instruments and voices, as well as the opportunity to play in large ensembles and in operatic settings.
The Master of Music degree in Collaborative Piano is a 30 credit program which focuses on accompanying and chamber music, collaborating with a wide range of instruments and voice, plus the opportunity to play in large ensembles and in operatic settings.

Those applying for the MM in Music Collaborative Piano must submit and/or complete the following:
- A Department of Music Graduate Study Application
- A three- to five-page paper addressing current issues in music performance to be used as a professional writing example
- Two letters of reference from professional colleagues or supervisors describing the candidate’s potential for success in the graduate music program
- An entrance performance audition on the candidate’s major instrument or voice, arranged with the applied professor in your area. A DVD or Web based link to a video may be accepted as a substitute for the live audition upon approval of the faculty and Director of Graduate Studies. Register for your audition.
Audition Requirements:
- Solo Piano Piece
- Movement of an Instrumental Chamber Piece (suggested literature: outer mvmt. of any Brahms or Beethoven duo sonata)
- Art Song/Aria Repertoire (suggested literature: songs of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Faure, Debussy, Barber, Rorem; arias from the Schirmer Opera Anthology, ed. Larsen)
- Sight-reading from instrumental and/or vocal repertoire
