Internship: Planned Parenthood

What is your major?

Where was your internship placement? (What is the purpose of the organization?)

I'm currently interning at Planned Parenthood in the Community Education Office. The purpose of the Community Education Office is to provide comprehensive reproductive and sexual health information to the community. We provide educational programs which enhance the understanding of individual and societal implications of human sexuality.

What did your general duties involve?

My job duties are numerous. My largest responsibility has been supporting and helping coordinate Teen Council, which is a group of about fifteen teenagers from high schools around the Duluth area. Our Teen Council meetings are held weekly, and much of my time is spent helping prepare for these. I research, interpret, and present information on health and social issues. I help plan lessons and present them at the meetings. I also create a weekly Teen Council newsletter and perform some other general office duties.

What was your most memorable experience?

In addition to the invaluable knowledge and skills I've formed that will directly influence my performance in future jobs, I've really enjoyed getting to know the teenagers who are involved in Teen Council. It's been rewarding to see everyone grow over such a short period of time, and I've enjoyed watching some of the shyer members open up.

Has your internship influenced your career path?

Yes; it has confirmed my instinct that education is my passion. It has also broadened my knowledge and perspective in many areas, from basic health information to self awareness.
