Internship: Visit Duluth, Spring 2011

I am a Communication Major with and English Minor.

Where was your internship placement? (What is the purpose of the organization?)

I am currently interning at Visit Duluth. Visit Duluth is the Official Duluth Travel Guide source. They specialize in providing brochures, directions, and information about Duluth and the surrounding areas to visitors. It also offers many advertising options for member businesses. Check out their website at www.visitduluth.com.

What did your general duties involve?

I am still new and getting into the swing of things at Visit Duluth, but I have got to contribute and achieve many things within the company. So far I have done the basic stuffing envelopes for the 2011 visitor’s guides, but I also have put together a monthly feature sheet of events within the Duluth area of all the attractions. We have placed them at different hotels to attract visitors. I have also got to see first-hand all the different places people come from to visit Duluth. I have also participated in events within the community. Thus far, I have had the experience of being at John Beargrease Sled Dog Race. I am excited for more events and duties to follow.

What was your most memorable experience?

So far, my most memorable experience while interning at Visit Duluth was being able to see the John Beargrease Sled Dog Race. I was able to meet the mushers and their dogs, as well as watch the race from right on the starting line. I recommend this experience to everyone. It is something I will never forget and an experience of a life time.

Has your internship influenced your career path?

I was nervous the first couple of days at my internship, but I gradually got used to it and know I love it. I went into it planning on working with public relations and special event planning. I have got to share my skills and help with this, but I have also got to learn so much. The people at Visit Duluth are so kind and accepting. I feel very comfortable in this internship setting. After getting hands-on experience with something that I have always wanted to do, it has reassured me that this is exactly the career path I want to take in my life.
