Joseph Pettit was raised in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and began studying double bass at age 10. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point with degrees in both jazz and classical performance. While in Stevens Point, he was very active in the Central Wisconsin music scene, performing in a wide variety of styles. Later, Pettit earned his masters degree at Arizona State University, where he studied under world-renowned bassist Catalin Rotaru and performed regularly in the greater Phoenix area. More recently, Pettit lived in Quito, Ecuador where he served as Principal Bassist for La Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional del Ecuador. Currently, Pettit is on faculty at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he teaches courses in double bass, improvisation, and jazz composition.
