Research & Teaching Areas

I research literature and film from 20th and 21st century Spain. Much of my research focuses on the development of fictional and filmic subjectivities, especially through impulses of desire or expressions of illness or neurosis. I am also tapped in to cultural affairs, public policy and practice, and the social good in communities in Spain, a framework of interests based on post-consumerism and post-capitalism. I have published on academic publishing and pedagogy as well: areas of mine that enhance my teaching and learning with students. I work as an editor in English, Portuguese, and Spanish for an academic journal. My experience shaping content and managing production of four issues per year helps me be a more productive and efficient writer and researcher.


Methodologies I Specialize In Using and Teaching

In my research, I do close readings of cultural products (namely, literature, film, cultural entities, and digital humanities) that are framed by the historical and social context of Spain. My teaching is first and foremost student-centered and caring. I motivate students to create their own pathway of learning, based on clear benchmarks and expectations. 


Philosophy of Relationship with Graduate Students

Graduate students who work with me are expected to be self-driven. They should thrive at working and learning independently. My role is to help them explore new ideas and to help them develop those ideas. I encourage students to be curious and empathetic learners. I am committed to helping them maintain balance, happiness, and meaning in their lives. I believe that academic study does not happen in a silo. Rather, it enriches one’s life, professionally and personally, and often in unexpected ways. 


How my Work Contribues to the World

Even though my research is dialed in to a specific geographic area (Spain), the research I carry out offers insight into larger cultural questions than span boundaries of space and time. What makes communities thrive? What role does literature and film have in a community? What can we learn about the self through studying cultural products?

An Example of Projects My Advisees Have Carried Out

I have had no graduate advisees yet. I am interested in working with graduate students who want to understand cultures and communities in in-depth ways, and those who are interested in publishing and editing. I also am willing to work with students who wish to pursue study of cultural products (namely, literature, film, digital humanities) in non-English languages, including Catalan, French, Spanish, or Portuguese.
