Personal Statement

I am originally from a small town in Northeast Missouri. The rural atmosphere helped me develop a traditional mindset that has carried me through to today. My travels to various parts of our nation have helped me to learn that my viewpoint is just one of many, and I have developed an interest in ideas that do not agree necessarily with mine.

I have almost 45 years of public speaking experience, and I have taught philanthropically for 20 years. I have taught and tutored a variety of Mathematics, English, Theater Arts, and many personal improvement courses. I have taught at least two sections of Public Speaking every semester since August 2013. I have been married since 1987. Our only son, his wife, and their three children live here in Duluth, also.

I earned my Master of Arts degree from the University of Central Missouri, and I was appointed to the UMD Faculty in August of 2014. We love the beauty of this city, and we truly enjoy the availability of outdoor activities in the region.

My research interests include analyses of literature and how it can change our perception of ourselves as we relate to others. My work focuses on children’s literature, in general, and the works of Dr. Seuss, specifically.

In addition to spending time with my grandchildren, I enjoy teaching, hiking, snow sledding (or just playing in the snow), reading, watching movies, and attending any Bulldog sporting event.
