Stephen Welsh, B.S. '70, retired in 2001 from the faculty at Superior High School where he taught American literature and was principal of their 7-12 secondary summer school.  He earned both an M.S. in English and an M.Ed. in educational administration from the University of Wisconsin--Superior, and also served as a sworn deputy sheriff in Douglas County, Wisconsin.

In 2010, Steve began enrolling in liberal arts courses of personal interest at UMD.   Attracted by the restructured Master of Liberal Studies degree program, he gained admission to the first cohort.  His Capstone Paper was an 80-page history of the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area in Duluth.

Steve praises the support and encouragement offered to older students returning to UMD for graduate study.  He notes that his severe hearing loss was routinely accommodated, and that faculty, staff, and fellow students were gracious and patient.  In 2015, he was awarded the M.L.S. at nearly 70 years of age, some 45 years after completing his B.S.
