The Master of Professional Studies in Multidisciplinary Research and Creativity evolved from UMD's beloved MLS (Master of Liberal Studies) program. This video showcasing a few of our alumni gives you a great sense of why and how a customized multidisciplinary masters degree might be perfect for you.

The Master of Professional Studies in Multidisciplinary Research & Creativity is an interdisciplinary, self-designed program that prioritizes applied research skills, creative and innovative problem-solving, socially conscious leadership, and the integration of theory and practice across disciplines. By engaging multiple disciplinary approaches to a selected problem, students develop their capacity to identify, delineate, and research key problems, building an empowered learning approach to their own professionalization.

Students assemble a degree program in consultation with their advisors. Unlike traditional graduate programs which focus on a single discipline, the MPS program allows you to choose from a wide range of elective subjects that expand your intellectual, creative, and professional horizons. Examples of this multidisciplinary approach include (but are not limited to) emphases in the following areas:

  • Media Studies
  • Global Indigenous Studies
  • Medical Humanities
  • Justice Studies
  • Sustainability Studies
  • The History of Ideas
