SMSC Scholars

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Endowed Scholarship was established in 2008 through a generous gift from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. The SMSC scholarship program is designed to recruit and retain talented American Indian students with demonstrated financial need to the University of Minnesota. The SMSC scholarship program is administered by the University's Office for Equity and Diversity. Application deadline: May 1st.

The Page Education Foundation awards scholarships to Minnesota students of color who attend Minnesota post-secondary schools and agree to complete annual service projects with young children. Students at all levels of academic achievement can qualify for a grant. Application deadline: May 1st. 

The Provost’s Professional Diversity Fellowship is intended to assist professional degree programs in promoting a diversity of views, experiences, and ideas through the recruitment and support of academically excellent students with diverse ethnic, racial, economic, and educational backgrounds and experiences. Programs are encouraged to consider students from groups that historically have been underrepresented in their disciplines. Application Deadline: February 7th.

The Graduate and Professional Scholarly Excellence in Equity and Diversity (SEED) Award. Application Deadline: April 1st.  The Graduate and Professional Scholarly Excellence in Equity and Diversity (SEED) Awards honor graduate and professional students at the University of Minnesota whose research and scholarly interests are focused on issues of equity, diversity, and/or social justice, and who demonstrate outstanding creativity, innovation, and potential for scholarly and/or professional excellence in their discipline or field. In addition, SEED awardees will demonstrate experience with or commitment to serving or working with underserved, underrepresented or marginalized populations.

Ethel Curry American Indian Leadership Scholarship program supports undergraduate students up to $2,000 per academic year and graduate students up to $4,000 per academic year. Applications and instructions can be found on the Indian Education page of the Minnesota Department of Education website: 

The American Indian Graduate Center (AIGC) is a national private 501(c)(3) non profit headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, providing fellowships to American Indian and Alaska Native graduate students throughout the United States. 

Catching the Dream (CTD) is a national Native American education and scholarship center.  CTD provides supplementary funding for those students who may have received financial assistance from other sources.  Application deadline for Fall admission: April 30th. 

The Graduate School administers University-wide fellowships and grants, based on academic merit. Currently enrolled graduate students at the University of Minnesota may apply.

Minnesota Indian Scholarship Program provides postsecondary financial assistance to eligible Minnesota resident students who are of one-fourth or more Indian ancestry and demonstrate financial need for an award.

The Udall Foundation has internship and scholarship program opportunities for American Indian and Alsaka Native Students.

The Native American Congressional Internship Program provides American Indian and Alaska Native students with the opportunity to gain practical experience with the federal legislative process in order to understand first-hand the government-to-government relationship between Tribes and the federal government. The internship is funded by the Native Nations Institute for Leadership, Management, and Policy.

The University of Minnesota Duluth may waive, in whole or in part, non-resident (out-of-state) tuition for high-ability non-resident, non-reciprocity graduate students.  Students with a minimum 3.0 (4.0 scale) undergraduate GPA are eligible for nomination.  Up to five waivers are available.
