The Geography program at UMD offers a BA degree with an honors option. The honors degree option requires a minimum GPA and completion of a senior project. The geography major students also have an opportunity to double-major with one of the other three programs offered in the department: Geographic Information Sciences (GIS), Urban and Regional Studies (URS), and Environment and Sustainability Studies (ES). The geography program provides a full range of topical courses, including physical geography; human geography; cultural geography; soil geography; water resources and management; political and economic geography; urban geography and planning; geography thought; field techniques; geographic seminar; and opportunities for independent studies of special interests to the students. The program is committed to creating a dynamic learning environment for students with close interactions between faculty and students, fieldwork, advanced technology and international context. Department faculty members have varied international interests and experience, for example, in China, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe.
The program prepares students with essential knowledge and skills needed to succeed in professional employment and graduate education. Recent graduates with a geography degree from our department have been employed as cartographer, city planner, GIS specialist, hydrologist, soil conservationist, water resources technician, natural resources planner, watershed technician, environmental scientist, crime analyst, meteorologist, K12 teacher, among others.
