Personal Statement

In 2017, I joined the Department of Communication. Before moving to Minnesota, I lived and studied in Georgia, Indiana, and Utah. I read, think, and write in the areas of rhetorical criticism and theory, continental philosophy, and visual culture. During the past decade, I have published more than twenty-five essays and book chapters on topics in both the ecological humanities and gender and sexuality studies. I am currently writing a book on the rhetoric of ecological grief. In the fall of 2019, I will be on leave to complete this manuscript. Some of my previously published work can be downloaded here.

I frequently teach courses in Philosophy and Rhetoric, Rhetorical Criticism, Ecological Communication, and Rhetorical and Historical Methods. From time to time, I offer a senior seminar on a special topic; in the summer of 2019, for instance, I will conduct a senior seminar on “Earthen Rhetoric.” I also welcome the opportunity to work with motivated students on independent studies and directed reading experiences in any of the areas mentioned above. Some of my past syllabuses can be downloaded here.

I live in Duluth with my partner, Brandon, and a cat, Judith.
